Step 1 — Start With the Wooden Jeep

Recommended body dimensions

Use the supplied drawing as the main reference:

Before adding the motor, check that there is enough space underneath the Jeep for:

  1. Motor
  2. Rear axle/wheel connection
  3. Battery holder
  4. Switch wiring

Step 2 — Prepare the Motor Mount

The supplied motor is a dual-shaft geared DC motor.

The two shafts are useful because they allow the drive wheels to be positioned on both sides.

Create a simple motor mounting block from scrap wood.

Make the motor bracket

  1. Measure the motor body.
  2. Cut two small wooden support pieces.
  3. Create a flat platform underneath the Jeep.
  4. Position the motor so the two shafts are perfectly horizontal.
  5. Mark the shaft locations.
  6. Drill holes slightly larger than the motor shaft.
  7. Secure the motor with a small bracket or screws.

Don't glue the motor directly to the wooden body.

A removable motor mount makes future repairs much easier.


Step 3 — Connect the Drive Wheels

This is the most important mechanical step.

The dual-shaft motor should be positioned across the rear of the Jeep.

The drive wheels should rotate freely without rubbing against the wooden body.

Check before wiring

Turn the wheel by hand.

It should rotate smoothly.

Then gently rotate the motor shaft by hand and make sure:

  • Wheels don't touch the body.
  • Wheels are parallel.
  • Motor is firmly fixed.
  • Both sides have enough clearance.

Step 4 — Install the Front Wheels

The front wheels don't need to be powered in this simple design.

Install a small wooden axle between the front wheels.

Make sure the front axle is aligned with the rear drive axle.

If the front axle is crooked, the Jeep may constantly turn toward one side.


Step 5 — Add the Battery Box

For a simple and child-friendly version, use a low-voltage AA battery holder.

A 2 × AA holder = approximately 3V 

Only use this voltage if it matches the rating of the reused motor.

Battery box placement : 

A good location is:

inside the Jeep body or underneath the rear section.

The battery holder should be securely fixed so that it doesn't move while the Jeep is travelling.

Why AA batteries?

They're inexpensive, easy to replace and simpler for a classroom project than loose rechargeable cells.

Never leave loose batteries accessible to small children.

Optional LED

For an educational version, you can add a small LED to demonstrate the electrical circuit.

But the LED should have the correct resistor and polarity. It isn't necessary for the Jeep to work.


Step 8 — Connect the Motor

Before installing the motor permanently, test it.

  1. Put the batteries into the holder.
  2. Connect the motor temporarily.
  3. Turn the switch ON.
  4. Observe the shaft.
  5. Check the rotation direction.
  6. Turn OFF immediately if the motor becomes unusually hot or makes abnormal noise.

If the Jeep moves backward

Simply reverse the motor's polarity:     Motor wire A → Battery -
                                                                 Motor wire B → Switch/Battery +

Reversing the polarity of a simple DC motor reverses its rotation.


Step 9 — Perform a Free-Wheel Test

Before placing the Jeep on the floor, lift the vehicle slightly.

Turn the switch ON.

Watch the wheels.

Check:

✅ Both drive wheels rotate
✅ Wheels don't wobble
✅ Motor doesn't touch the floor
✅ Wires don't touch moving wheels
✅ Battery holder remains secure
✅ Switch works correctly

Only after this test should you place the Jeep on the floor.


Step 10 — First Driving Test

Put the Jeep on a flat, smooth surface.

Good surfaces include:

  • Wooden floor
  • Smooth tile
  • Classroom table
  • Smooth playroom floor

Avoid:

  • Stairs
  • Roads
  • Wet surfaces
  • Uneven ground
  • Carpets that can overload the small motor
